Sold my 87
Honda M
agna and immediately rolled the proceeds ($1500)
into this. It’s 92 SVX, 224k miles.
It’s
equipped with touring package (leather seats
, speed sensitive steering, power driver
seat and heated mirrors).
The good -
I
t r
uns well
on all cylinders, good brakes, exhaust,
tires and electrics (everything but one rear window works). It’s nice to
rq
ue
y motor, happy with the performance thus far.
The bad - has a good oil leak
(hoping fo
r valve covers), throwing a transmission code (though transmission does goes through all gears fine),
a decent size crease
in pass front fender and a bunch of
small
gouges / dings
on passenger door.
Ty
pical for 90s cars
this age,
the clearcoat on all flat surfaces is failing. Yes, this is why i included pics of the driver’s side :) The
left taillight is
ret
ai
ning water due to a crack
and 3rd brake light has some bad LEDs. I already have parts coming for those.
Immediate plans are to address the oil leak, see what the transmission code is for and whether practical to address, or just hold out until it stops shifting. See if I can wrap or paint black the roof, and ac quire a nicer matching color fender and hood to clean up the cosmetics some. I’ve got a local line on what should be reasonably priced parts already.
And in the meantime experience one of my dream cars on the cheap :) .
Happy NFL day Oppos!

Nice addition!
Yeah, it’s hard to convey just how “breakthrough” those were at the time.
“Hey! Subaru just introduced an interesting car! Go figger!”

That’s quite the origami front plate it’s sporting! I’d like to know how the previous owner managed that without amassing collateral damage in the immediate vicinity.

Nice one
I had to Google what a Honda Magna was as I’m use to the Magna name being a local Mitsubishi car model here in Australia

Cool! Didn’t Subaru get in hot water with the insurance industry because this car had and ad tag line like “it handles so well, you’ll drive so fast you’ll get tons of speeding tickets..”. Something like that?

I had the pleasure of piloting one of these owned by my step dad on occasion. I really liked it and to this day I think it’s one of my favorite touring cars. My only complaint was the windshield wipers would start to lift off the glass at speeds over 100.

I saw an SVX on 90 around Ritzville last week.

My favorite Subaru ever, they look so cool. A manual swapped one of these has a spot reserved
in my dream garage.

What an awesome car, and probably the last time Subaru actually took a styling risk

Wut?
I mean, not all of them looked good, but even then they were putting functional hood scoops on lesbian soccer mom cars for quite a while.

I don’t really consider the first two styling risks, I mean, ute versions of ordinary cars have existed for a long time. They’re less common than they used to be, but its an established, proven concept. It was a financial risk in re-entering a nearly dead market category, but not really a stylistic risk. It was just an ordinary Outback with the rear chopped off.
The bugeye was pushing the envelope a bit, but not really groundbreaking in the way the SVX was, which really looked like nothing else on the road.
I’ll give you the Benign Tribeca though, that one was kinda out of left field. And the weirdness didn’t stop with the Flying Vagina grille, the interior was pretty wacky too.

The SVX was definitely unique, I just think it was their first crack at it, not their last.
I don’t think tou have to be groundbreaking to have a “risky” design. Just not the same boring song that everyone else is writing.

When I was in college a friend of mine bought one in the same color. When he bought it the conversation went like this:
Him: Hey I bought a car. Want to give me a ride to pick it up? (We’re in Michigan mind you)
Me: Ok, where is it?
Him: Tennessee
Me: What?!.... Ok
And away we went that weekend.

I have not th e skills but a few Subaru enthusiast friends that would probably be happy to assist if it comes up. From what I’m reading you can pull any 4EAT auto from a 97 and earlier to swap in.

Mine was a super Magna, t he last couple years they were out they restyled them. Pretty bike and quad pipes so Sounded great... but not an ideal fit for a tall guy like me. Got monkey butt pretty quick.

I know, odd to sell alongside the basic sedans and wagons and the little Justy.
The XT they sold before was fairly wild too but not to the same degree.

Maybe, but that seems like a hell of a lot of parking lot metalwork not to have carried any damage over into the bumper.
I haven’t seen an SVX on the road in ages. I’ll keep an eye out for it!

They had a red 95 in the Tacoma Pick-N-Pull a few weeks ago. Not sure if it is still there.

Excellent. Achingly cool.
“ Honda Magna” freaked me the hell out since we have a Mitsubishi Magna in Australia. It’s like if I said Ford Corvette.

Congratulations.
As one who has done this before, I am glad to see an SVX being taken care of.
I had a 92 Bordeaux LS-L. I ended up doing a little bit of work on it, re-wired the charging system and replaced the alternator, and some other stuff.
I so wish there were a newer version of this car.
